WEEE (Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment)

To encourage reuse of Electrical & Electronic Equipment (EEE) wherever possible, ensure proper recovery/recycling of materials when required, and to prevent the disposal of such equipment at the end of its life into landfill sites, the EU directive on Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE) has been adopted into UK legislation. When EEE reaches the end of its life it is termed WEEE.

The UK WEEE regulations require that businesses involved in the supply of electrical and electronic equipment take an active role in its collection and recycling.

This means that as a producer of EEE our company Business-ip Ltd has registered into an Environment Agency approved WEEE scheme to facilitate the collection, storage, treatment, recovery/recycling of EEE we have introduced into the market under the BIP Light Control brand name. This helps to encourage reuse, recovery/recycling and reduces the amount of waste destined for landfill. Our Environment Agency producer registration number is WEE/EF0990TQ. The Environment Agency approved scheme we belong to is operated by WERCS Limited (Waste Electrical Recycling Compliance Scheme).

1. What products are covered by WEEE regulations?

The WEEE regulations only apply to electrical or electronic items. If the item is powered by, or operates by any form of electricity (mains, batteries, solar power etc.) it is likely to be covered by the regulations.

1. Large household appliances (eg refrigerators, freezers, washing machines)
2. Small household appliances (eg vacuum cleaners, sewing machines, irons)
3. IT & Telecommunications equipment (eg personal computers, laptops, printers)
4. Consumer equipment (eg radios, televisions, video cameras, musical instruments)
5. Lighting equipment
6. Electrical & electronic tools (eg drills, saws, sanders)
7. Toys, leisure & sports equipment (eg trains sets, slot car racing sets, video game consoles)
8. Medical devices
9. Monitoring & control instruments (eg smoke detectors, heating thermostats, weighing scales)
10. Automatic dispensers (eg vending machines, coin change dispensers)

In our case, our electrical and electronic professional photographic studio products fall under WEEE category 5 - Lighting equipment.

Products bearing the "Crossed Out Wheelie Bin Symbol" are covered by the WEEE regulations. The Crossed Out Wheelie Bin Symbol is intended to remind the person deciding that the equipment has reached the end of its life that the equipment should not be disposed of in the normal waste collection facility but should instead be segregated. Depending on the date purchased and other circumstances (see below), it may then be appropriate to return the equipment to the equipment producer for recycling through their recognised WEEE scheme.

The solid black bar below the Crossed Out Wheelie Bin Symbol is a date mark indicating that the equipment was placed into the market since 13th September 2005. This affects the procedures to be followed for recycled of the equipment (see below).

Products also carry the producer identification mark which in our case is the biplightcontrol.com logo.

2. What should you do when an EEE product reaches the end of its life?

Firstly, consider whether the equipment could be reused by someone else thereby extending its life.

a) For BIP Light Control EEE products purchased from us since 13th September 2005

If you have purchased an Electrical or Electronic Equipment product from us which has the biplightcontrol.com logo which you wish to dispose of and it was purchased since 13th September 2005, then you can return it to us for recovery/recycling through the WEEE scheme we belong to. This is a free service but you will need to cover the cost of returning the product to us.

You only need to return the electrical or electronic parts. For example, it is not necessary to return light stands. Please note that after assessing the returned products, we may choose to provide EEE to charities in preference to recovery/recycling of materials where appropriate thereby extending the product's life.

If the equipment is from a producer other than us and not branded biplightcontrol.com you should refer to them for their WEEE arrangements.

The BIP Light Control website contains an online WEEE returns form which customers are required to complete in order to be issued with a WEEE returns number to initiate the return. This will enable us to trace and measure the amount of WEEE we take back as required by the regulations. Please note, we are unable to accept returned items without a correctly issued WEEE returns number.

b) For other EEE products purchased before 13th September 2005 (Historic WEEE)

If the product you wish to dispose of was purchased before 13th September 2005 and you are purchasing a similar replacement product from us (on a "like for like" basis) then you can return the old product to us for recovery/recycling through the WEEE scheme we belong to. For example, if you are replacing an older tungsten studio light with one of our BIP Light Control branded daylight fluorescent studio lights, then you can return the unwanted tungsten light to us at the time of purchasing the new light. This facility is limited to "like for like" and "quantity for quantity" and to the time of purchase. This is a free service but you will need to cover the cost of returning the product to us.
